According to an article in Pick Up Trucks, August 2016 found the popularity of the midsize pickup truck growing except for the usually top-selling Toyota Tacoma, which showed a three-month sales decline. The new midsize Honda Ridgeline also outsold the GMC Canyon for the first time.
But the Nissan Frontier won’t be ignored. It had a very strong August, selling more vehicles than the Chevrolet Colorado and almost topping the Toyota Tundra. The trend is expected to continue with midsize pickup truck sales increasing throughout the fourth quarter of the year.
The pickups that had a difficult sales month in August and really all of 2016 are the bigger, full-size competitors like Nissan. Even the new Titan XD and Nissan Titan Half-Ton didn’t seem to stir up a whole lot of interest from buyers. As the company focuses on year-end market share tallies and their dealers need to make room for incoming new models, good incentive programs might help them rally.
This full-size truck sales slowdown didn’t just impact Nissan. While smaller, capable pickups like the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon saw growth, their full-size trucks didn’t fare as well in August.
Looking at the full-size truck segment as a whole in the August 2016 pickup sales breakdown, we found some interesting numbers. If you add the Chevrolet and GMC full-size pickup sales totals together, it looks like GM is catching up to Ford. And if you combine year-to-date totals for Chevy and GMC full-size pickups it shows less than 1,300 units behind Ford as compared to 15,000 units behind in June.
But if you add in the Chevy and GMC midsize trucks then GM surpasses Ford. It’s pretty plain to see that GM’s (Chevrolet and GMC) three-truck strategy is quite successful against its competitors. We’ll see if this trend continues through the end of the year or if Ford will stage a big comeback.
The August 2016 pickup sales breakdown provides a ton of great insight. Maybe you stuck with a Toyota Tundra or were the exception to the rule and bought a new Nissan Titan XD. Perhaps, you weren’t in the market for a new truck and have your tried and true in the garage right now.
